The History of the African American Experience in the American West, including Hawaii, Alaska and the Western Region of Canada from the 1800s to the 1980s
The Journal of African American History (formerly the Journal of Negro History) is planning a special issue on the history of the Black Experience in the American West, including Hawaii, Alaska and the western region of Canada. Indeed there is a small body of literature that is presently emerging in this subject area. However, more research and literature needs to be written in order to shed light on the Black experience in the West. Hence, The Journal of African American History will devote an entire issue to historical essays on the African American Western experience.
The Journal of African American History welcomes essays
on any aspect of the diverse histories of the African American Western experience,
from 1800s to 1980s, including but not limited to a focus on: 1) a particular
educational institution; 2) issues of gender, class, and/or inter-ethnic relations,

5) Black towns; 6) Black women; 7) civic and social activism and politics; 8)
